Water - the Essential Element of Life

A healthy diet forms the basis for overall health, but this alone is not enough to provide our bodies with the optimum amount of nutrients. Adequate hydration is just as important. Water and herbal teas are particularly important as they support our body's vital functions in a variety of ways.

Water as the organism's fuel

Water is the central element for the survival and functionality of the human body. It is far more than just a thirst quencher; it is the fuel that keeps the entire body running. While humans can survive for weeks without food, they can only survive for a few days without water. This fact illustrates the central role that water plays in our lives.

The body consists to a significant extent of water - around 60 percent of our body weight is due to water. Every single cell in the body relies on water to function properly. Water is particularly important for the metabolism, which transports waste products from the cells via the blood to the kidneys and liver. These organs filter and detoxify the body before the harmful substances are excreted. Without an adequate intake of water, this cleansing process can be disrupted, which can lead to long-term health problems.

Water also plays a crucial role in the distribution of oxygen, nutrients and hormones in the body. The blood, which consists of around 90 percent water, performs this transport function. If the body is supplied with too little fluid, this cycle comes to a grinding halt, which can lead to tiredness, poor concentration and reduced performance.

Lack of fluids: an underestimated risk

A lack of water quickly becomes noticeable, especially during intense exercise or high temperatures. Fluid loss through sweating helps to cool us down but also leads to a thickening of the blood, which makes it more difficult to transport oxygen and reduces physical and mental performance. This condition can lead to rapid exhaustion and, in extreme cases, dehydration, which presents health risks. Therefore keeping hydrating is critical especially when exercising or being in hot environments for longer periods of time.

Water as a taste experience

Many people find water tasteless and therefore prefer to drink flavored drinks such as soft drinks, lemonade or coffee. However, these drinks are often high in sugar, caffeine and other additives such as food dyes that do more harm than good to the body. Some of them even have a dehydrating effect and deprive the body of important minerals.

But water doesn't have to be boring. The taste of water can be spiced up with a few simple tricks: Fresh mint leaves, slices of ginger or fruit, or pieces of lemon not only add a refreshing note to water, but also provide additional health benefits. Ginger has an anti-inflammatory effect; lemon provides valuable vitamin C and mint aids digestion.
